Air Time

Skyrider, originally uploaded by Sabine Dukes.

I went for a walk yesterday.

It was a little disappointing. It was just a short walk, but I could barely complete it. My hip cramped up (yes, hips can cramp), my ribs all tightened up, and I was out of breath. The worst part was that I could not even take pictures and I looked like a total goober trying to hold up the camera with one hand.

By the time I got back to the car, I was limping and scrunched all sideways and could barely move. And the only pictures I could take were of the ground.

It was pretty pitiful.

Healing is weird like that. The day after the accident, Donna and I were doing laps around the hospital ward. We had boundless energy as we dragged our giant iv poles around and around the halls. Maybe we were doped up on morphine, maybe we were thrilled to be moving and breathing on our own, maybe we weren’t really going as fast as I remember. But it just seems like I haven’t made a lot of progress since that day.

(I totally took a lap on Donna in our IV crit by the way…just sayin…and dont laugh at my bed head)

I am going to try walking again today..maybe just a few feet further, cuz thats what us athletic types do. We can’t sit still and if folks tell us to rest, we do the opposite and if a walk disappoints, we come back the next day and try again.

I’ve totally gotten into the Tour this year. Have no idea if I would have had I not be laid up, but I am glad I gave it a chance. What a show these guys are giving! Love the CSC team tag, and Cadel crying with the lion, and Menchov all emotionless and tenacious, and Christian finding confidence and its still wide open for the top spot.

Good stuff

Make sure you throw in some wine-drinking intervals after you walk (’cause that’s what us athletic types do….). BTW, that hospital hallway looks all too familiar. I think it’s time to quit the Regional Med Ctr Points Race series!

You were moving pretty good in the hospital. Not too slowly. I know you are opening wine bottles single handedly. But as importantly, how is the progress of one handed margaritas.

I still think that picture is way too cool.

I agree, no more RMC!

I think Paige is back there again by the way. She underwent an operation to put her skull back in place. I check her journal often and all my hopes and wishes are with her and her family as she begins a road to recovery that really does make ours look like a walk in the park.

perspective and all that.

So, I will just be content with taking pictures of the ground for a while.

I know how that feels. Sometimes the body responds and sometimes it doesn’t. Try not to get too frustrated (I know, the pot calling the kettle black) — it does get better. Just never as quickly as we want it to. Do what you can and listen to the docs. Every time I didn’t, I lived to regret it.

Hang in there — I’ll have a thai beer or something for you tomorrow.

girochatterboxs last blog post..Thank you sponsors! A review of commercial sponsors for the Versus TDF coverage

ItinerantRick July 26th, 2008 at 12:40 am

Yes, all in perspective. But we need to stop feeding the Hellyer - RMC pipeline.

The ribs are the nasties for doing things like walking, breathing, and forget laughing or coughing. Hope that all passes quickly for you.

Perhaps Michael can put together some version of 100M ’sprint’ for those injured at Hellyer this summer pushing IV poles on a Friday night; perhaps right after the Kiddie Kilo ;-)

BellaBear July 26th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

At least you are up and moving and as long as you keep doing that, you’ll be better really soon! And try and keep taking pictures, they are amazing!!!
