There’s a New Sheriff in Town

Did you know that the Vuelta is going on right now?

Its been on for a week, and I just realized it yesterday. Levi is in yellow. And I haven’t been paying a lick of attention.

It might be because I am too busy riding and swimming and picking backsplash tile. Or it might be because I am sort of over it right now.

I hope not, because I love the sport of cycling….but I am a little weary of it. Not just weary of the euro stuff and all the drugs and bad hair. But of cycling in general. The myopic training hard and talking about heart rates and carbon nanograms and calories and watts and I would have won if only type of cycling.

As I seek to regain fitness, its not racing I am thinking about as the epitome of fitness. Its the effortless gliding speed of a tailwind, the power in the last two strokes at the crest of a climb, the body language to scuttle over a tricky rock garden, the glow of a smile at the end of an awesome singletrack.

Cyclocross season is coming up and its colorful wackiness and plentiful beer might be just the ticket to reignite my love for the racing…until then, I’ll be honored to enjoy the ride.

i’m not into la vuelta much either. i hate getting hurt and watching friends get hurt doing stuff we love to do. but, i really like your idea of getting fit for the good feeling it brings and that it doesn’t have to be related to racing just yet. i’m keeping that that thought close right now.

It’s important to have cycling vacations, where you take time away completely from your normal cycling milieu, but, if you want to stay in it somehow, start on a totally new path. Like, say, load up a touring bike and go ride around chasing the sunset for a week. Or ride a singlespeed mountain bike and drink beer on rides. Or ride with a kid you like. Or whatever. For me, whenever I’ve had enough of one part of cycling I can usually find another kind of pedaling that is totally fresh. But I am another one of those people in the cave, watching the reflection on the wall; it’s only cycling for me, no time for another avocation, too focused on my little world. It was really nice to focus on one big thing this summer, and now cx feels fresh and different. I hope you get your cycling jones back in one form or another. Meantime keep taking pictures.

I have no motivation problems as it concerns cycling. I am so excited to be able to ride my road bike this week.

I’m just not very excited about racing.

when you get better enough we’ll throw together a fatty mountain bike ride. I will share with you the endless joys of listening to me sing non-stop Billy Joel and Fleetwood Mac while climbing singletrack.
